Science Experiment: Investigate how Soil/Clay sinks to the bottom of a bottle

We were learning about water treatment and purification in Science. We learned how water is treated in a reservoir, before it flows out of your tap. We carried out an experiment to investigate the first stage of water treatment, when floating matter can be removed, and the dirt sinks to the bottom.

Picture 1: We added pebbles, bits of twigs, grass and soil to our bottle. We filled the bottle with water, closed the lid, and shook it.
Picture 2: After 2 days our water quality had improved.

Picture 3: The water is much clearer now. Some material has risen to the top. The mud and soil has settled on the bottom.

School Assembly: Women in Sport

To round off our brilliant Women In Sport week, we had a visit from professional golfers Leona and Lisa Maguire from Cavan. 4th class led the assembly, and told the whole school all about the activities we enjoyed during the week. Leona and Lisa Maguire spoke to us about their lives as professional sportswomen. We finished off with an inspirational song. Thank you to Ms Byrd for preparing us for the assembly.

World Book Day

We celebrated World Book Day in 4th class in many ways. We visited Eason's with our World Book Day tokens, and collected our free books, and a lovely treat. Mrs Cosgrove's class visited the library, and enjoyed storytime with Daria Walsh. Daria gave the girls a signed copy of her book The Blueberry Monster, to take back to school. Thank you Daria!

Women in Sport

As part of our Women in Sport initiative, we were lucky enough to have two brilliant sportswomen in St Clare's to talk to us about sport. Ms Nessa Byrd, captain of the Cavan Ladies Football team, and Erinn Galligan, captain of the Cavan Ladies Camogie team, told us all about their sports, and how they enjoy their training, and being part of their teams. They showed us what we can achieve, in any sport we may be interested in. They encouraged us all to try out sports, to find what we like, and to train and practice. Who knows where it may take us! It was a very inspiring session.

Cycling

4th class have started Cycling lessons with Francis from Bike Green. Firstly Francis told us all about cycling safety, and the importance of always wearing a helmet. He showed us how to fit and tighten our helmets. Then, it was time to cycle! Cycling is brilliant fun, and is such good exercise too. We can't wait for our next lesson.
